ABSTRACT
The study seeks to examine the role of electronic media in informing women on vocational skills acquisition; a case study of Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State. The study is set to achieve the three objectives of which include; to find out the level of awareness of vocational skills acquisition programs among media exposed women, to find out how media exposed women utilize vocational skills information and to identify any challenges media exposed women face in the utilization of information on vocational skills acquisition program in Gwale LGA. To achieve these, Information Motivation Behavioral Skills Model was adopted. Survey research designed was adopted in this study and 138, 626 were the population of this study, 384 sample size was used in the study. The sampling technique used is simple random sampling technique of which the sample chooses is not bias. A self designed questionnaire was used in collection of data for the research. The questionnaire consists of two sections. The instrument was validated by the supervisor in the field of Mass Communication. The administration of the instrument was done by the researcher with the assistance of the research assistance. The instrument was also analyzed by using simple frequency and percentage counts which were illustrated using tables. The findings has raised the following recommendations: Kano state government should provide an adequate platform for women and to put an end to the contentious issue of women marginalization particularly on vocational skills programmes, this could help them be active in carrying out their activities effectively and ensure smooth running of the programmes among women. Media broadcasting institutions should also create an avenue that would increase the level of women’s awareness on information utilization particularly with regard to vocational skills programs in the state in order to improve their socio-economic well-being of women in the study area. And that sensitization and enlightenment should be made to the members of the community on the importance of women participation in vocational skills programs towards the promotion of the socio-economic status of women in Gwale Local Government Area.
